GPX Viewer PRO on iOS: exploring the differences to Android

Are you using iPhone or iPad or maybe you are planning to switch to an Apple device in the future? In this post we would like to present our GPX Viewer PRO application on iOS and compare it to our GPX Viewer PRO on Android. It’s important to note that GPX Viewer PRO on iOS and GPX Viewer PRO on Android are two separate apps, not all their features work the same way on both platforms. GPX Viewer on Android was first released in 2014, while the iOS version was introduced six years later in 2020. As a result, GPX Viewer PRO on Android currently boasts more extensive functionality. However we are constantly working on implementing more features for the iOS app, more updates are coming soon.

Here’s a closer look at the main differences between our iOS and Android applications.

Interface differences

The iOS app has a different interface compared to our Android app due to Apple’s specific guidelines for iPhone and iPad apps. In GPX Viewer PRO on iOS the menu is at the bottom of the screen, there you can find Map button, which takes you back to the map, Tracks and Waypoints buttons to see the lists of your tracks and waypoints, Trackbook button to synchronize the app with our web app Trackbook, and Settings button, where you can for example choose a map type or download a new offline map.

Track recording feature is always ready to use

Start recording your track by tapping the recording button on the upper part of the screen. On Android you need to activate the track recording feature in the menu to start recording.

Open tracks faster

Another important difference is that when you want to open an external GPX file in GPX Viewer PRO on iOS, the track is imported to the app, while GPX Viewer PRO on Android opens the file locally. To import new tracks you need to tap on Tracks button and then tap Import in the upper left corner. Importing files, rather than opening them locally, enhances the application’s loading speed.

Create waypoints effortlessly

Adding a waypoint can’t be easier with GPX Viewer on iOS, just tap and hold a spot to add a waypoint. You can name your waypoint, add a comment or choose a waypoint icon in the Waypoints section. To create a waypoint on Android, you first need to select Create & Edit option in the left main menu.

While there are some differences between the iOS and Android versions, both apps provide powerful tools for tracking and exploring your adventures.
